Our History begins with Edwin James Cockburn senior. He started trading on his own in the summer of 1959. Primarily serving the Agricultural network of our rural surroundings, he worked for a time as a sole trader before being joined by son Ed Junior in the 1960s when E J Cockburn & Son was then formed. Long hours of hard toil, coupled with 100% honesty and a genuine pride in the quality of their workmanship were the building blocks of the company, which still hold true today.
The company carried out many different types of work, ranging from repairs to agricultural tractors / implements, car / light commercial vehicles to bespoke engineering and fabrication tasks (many of which can still be seen locally today). By the mid 1980s, changes in agriculture led to the decision to concentrate fully on the automotive side of the business, which fitted in perfectly with grandson Philip having worked as an apprentice mechanic in the local Audi / VW dealership and joining the company in 1989, bringing with him new styles and skills drawn from the main dealer environment.
With the business once again father and son, side by side, new ideas and fresh outlooks met with experience and wisdom. Noting the trend of increasing complexity of modern vehicles, a decision to keep pace with these ever-changing technologies and forge ahead with electronic diagnostics has meant the company has been able to thrive and grow with greater confidence. It has further expanded with hand-picked key members of staff being drawn from other local businesses, who work together now to take care of the daily running of the garage, allowing Philip to focus on other specialised areas and services.
Today, all these years on, we still believe our reliable, efficient and friendly service is truly second to none throughout the local area and continue working to maintain our enviable reputation which was built up over the years due to the hard work and dedication we show to each and every one of our valued customers.
